The re-use of data held by the public sector is a cornerstone of the European Union’s development policies. This paper assesses the capability of public administrations to provide environmental data collected under Directive 2010/75/EU and Regulation (EC) No 166/2006 in a volume and format that meets users’ informational needs. The research was conducted by consulting available databases and submitting access requests to public records. Our findings reveal that most Italian public administrations, unlike their European counterparts, cannot provide re-usable data. Subsequently, we discovered that only those equipped with appropriate information and communication technologies for data processing can meet users’ requirements. Therefore, we propose developing new software based on these technologies and extending its use nationwide. This would enhance transparency, enabling both private and public actors to integrate environmental data into their decision-making processes.
