Through a careful examination of Europe’s pioneering role in integrating artificial intelligence within public administration, this paper aims to gain a greater understanding of how artificial intelligence is transforming the governance landscape during the transition to a post-digital government era. The study investigates the various contributions of artificial intelligence, in improving the quality of services, in promoting effective strategies, and in improving user interaction within public administration. Despite the numerous advantages offered by artificial intelligence, the study recognizes and carefully explores potential risks, which include vulnerabilities in cybersecurity, concerns about citizens’ data privacy, the spread of disinformation, potential discriminatory outcomes and the risk of excessive dependence on artificial intelligence. In this regard, the article also explores initiatives aimed at regulating artificial intelligence and establishing ethical controls on algorithms, ensuring a transparent and responsible implementation of this transformative technology. In this way, throughout all of it, the paper proposes to broaden the understanding of Europe’s influential role and contribute to the wider debate on the responsible integration of artificial intelligence in post-digital government contexts.
